"Ashin Kumarakassapa"

During the time of Lord Buddha, a young monk by he name of Ashin Kumarakassapa tried to break open his own body with his knowledge and observe it. He tried to discover the true nature of his body.

Ashin Kumarakassapa could preach strange and interesting sermons and Lord Buddha himself honored him and recognized him as the best preacher.

His parents hail from the town of Rajagaha. Since the early days of pregnancy of Ashin Kumarakassapa, his mother requested permission from her husband and became a Buddhist nun at the monastery of Devadatta. Her pregnancy became noticeable only after she became a nun and Devadatta expelled her from the Monastery pronouncing her as an immoral nun. This young helpless nun dare not return home and met Lord Buddha who was at that time residing in Savatthi.

With the help of famous persons like King Kosala, the wealthy Anathapindika, and Visakha, Lord Buddha made the people realize that the pregnancy was conceived before she became a nun. He saw to it that the child was given a proper birth,

King Kosala named the child Kumarakassapa'and let him stay in the palace. Kumarakassapa became a novice at the age of seven, and a monk at the age of twenty.

One day, when Ashin Kumarakassapa was going around for alms food, his mother, who had not seen him for a long time, called him in a loud voice and followed him. Ashin Kumarakassapa scrutinized the event taking place and realized that so long as this Samudaya samyojana (attachment or clinging) remains in his mother she will never be free from Dukkha (suffering). So that there will no longer be Samudaya samyojana, he spoke harshly to his mother. At that moment, the mother attained Sati-Samvega (mindfulness and remorse), meditated and became an Arahant.

This is the background history of Ashin Kumarakassapasfamily. Ashin Kumarakassapa learnt the method of meditation from Lord Buddha, and meditated in a small monastery in a forest north of the Jetavana monastery.

One night while Ashin Kumarakassapa was meditating, an inconspicuous DeK?(who was an old friend and is now a Brahma) told him to dig into his body which is like an ant hill by citing examples. Ashin Kumarakassapa cou:c not understand the meaning of these examples and askec Lord Buddha the next day. Buddha explained the meanings of the different examples individually.

While Lord Buddha was explaining the meanings, Ashin Kumarakassapa tried to observe his body with insight, and on the spot became an Arahant free from defilements (Asava).

Ashin Kuiyarakassapawss, during the latter part of Lord Kassapa, one of the seven monks who meditate: and passed away on a mountain.

At that time, one of the monks became an Arahant one became an Anagami (non-returner) and became a Brahma on his death. It is this Brahma who had just preached Ashin Kumarakassapa giving him examples.

During the time of Lord Gotama, the other five monks became Ashin Kumarakassapa, Ashin Dhabba, King Pukkusati, Sabhiya-paribbajaka, and Bahiya-daruciriya. Their old Brahma friend helped spme of them to become Arahants.
